Marshal and Evanica are connected by a mutual respect for calm and lovely things, and they were drawn to each other by the beauty of Lake Quinault in early summer. Evanica and the narrator had a romantic conversation on a lakeside day five years ago, and the narrator was saddened by the prospect of never seeing her again. Five years later, Evanica returned to the narrator's secret location and the narrator was surprised to find her there.
